Dune Planting and a Prickly Guest

It was a surprisingly sunny winter's day for our annual planting day in the dunes near the 'big stairs' at Carri.  A small group of friends and family joined us to plant about 500 native plants to improve the dune habitat and prevent erosion.  This year was notably different from last year when I was clambering up and down the dunes whilst heavily pregnant!  In fact this year three of our team were under 1 yr old!  They didn't improve our planting rate but were a very welcome distraction!  Hopefully visitors to The Running Postman will see evidence of our team's revegetation efforts when they visit the beach.

The other recent event of note is that we had a prickly guest stay.  Like most guests, we didn't get to meet this one but there was obvious evidence of their visit.  Fortunately it was the sort of mess we love to find (you won't hear me say that very often!!).  Scattered through the garden were distinctive diggings that left us in no doubt that our garden had been visited by an echidna! Hooray!  We're hoping it enjoyed the garden so much it will become a repeat visitor.  Please make it welcome if you see it during your stay!

Christmas at Carri

1/1/2012

We've just returned from spending Christmas at The Running Postman with my parents who were over from NZ (apologies to those of you who wanted to book this week - for once we managed to get in first!).  There's nothing like a week at Carri to put you in to serious relaxation mode.  The weather was stunning almost all of the time and the water at the beach was calm and crystal clear (still a bit brisk!) - I just love it when you can see small fish in the shallows as you wade in for dip.  Highlights of this trip that might interest future visitors to The Running Postman were: seeing a young dolphin jump clear out of the water, visiting Second Valley and Rapid Bay to try our hand at fishing for squid (and Dad getting one on his first ever cast!) - gorgeous spots to visit even if you're not interested in fishing, spotting the baby Blue-tonged Lizards in the garden (Hooray!), and dining at The Court House Restaurant (Anthony declared the duck main course the best duck he's ever eaten! A big call from him).  Hope you get to enjoy similar highlights when you next stay at The Running Postman.

Apologies to those of you whose booking requests have gone unanswered for a few days.  We have a good excuse!  Our little girl, Charli Anne Abley, was born last week.  She is the absolute apple of our eye and we can't wait to introduce her to the beach at Carrickalinga.  Hopefully I manage to still get enough sleep to reply to your enquiries promptly...if there are a few missing words and spelling mistakes you'll know I'm not running on all cylinders!

The Jetty Store makes the Sydney Morning Herald Good Food Guide 2012!

It seems that we're not the only ones that think the Jetty Store is a winning cafe!  So good to see it get this recognition (I hear only 10 South Australian eateries made it into the guide).  Check it out when you're staying at The Running Postman or just down for a Sunday drive. Our current absolute fav is the calamari box washed down with a fresh juice - the perfect weekend treat!

“It’s a bright blue treasure trove of artisan eats and original artworks. Dine in, take away or buy the basics and create a beach-house feast. The fish and chips are hard to beat.” Sydney Morning Herald, Good Food Guide 2012

With just two weeks until our baby is due, we've finally got our holiday house, The Running Postman, ready for others to enjoy too!  It's been fun adding a few extra touches to ensure our guests feel that staying at the Running Postman is a bit of a treat and they are able to enjoy a really easy, relaxing holiday.  It's even a treat for us to stay there - somehow all the new things go to Carrickalinga and our house in Adelaide get's the hand me downs!
We really hope you enjoy staying at The Running Postman and that you can give us some feedback on the highlights of your stay including your top tips of things to do and see.
Kirst and Ant (and the baby bump!)
